How much tax gets returned?

Recommended Posts

A pub conversation last night involved getting free child care; my view on this is that its the state are encouraging a certain behaviour.

If the Government are taxing us all, and then giving us some of it back, surely we are being taxed too much?

The Government should get enough tax from people to build our roads etc. and help the needy.

The government does all kinds of social engineering, anti smoking campaigns, vaccination campaigns, healthy eating campaigns, sports facilities, etc, etc. I suppose free childcare is targeted at a specific demographic, but then so are children's play areas in parks.

I think that the idea behind the free childcare is to enable a 2nd parent to return to work, so the cost is probably about neutral to the government in the long run (although industry predictions are that the scheme will fail and was set up in a way that guarantees failure).

I am sure we all agree that social engineering to get people healthier is a positive; but should the state be encouraging a way of life?

The state wants both parents working, I don't think the state should be interfering in such a way.

If the state doesn't support families were both parents work it's surely encouraging a particular way of life.

Don't forget that nurseries are not just about enabling both parents to go to work. They play a big part in socialising young children and preparing them for when they go to school.

I dont believe that state should make childcare free for anyone.

It seems to me that the state support married people to work, single people to work and they also give a tax allowance to married couples(£230).

All children get free education from the age of 4/5, some countries believe children benefit from starting school at a older age. The UK seem to be paying for child care from age zero.

Parents should have a choice of whether they work or bring up their children. Unfortunately wages being so low and costs being so high means that most parents have to both work to make a living, which means they then have to pay for childcare, which they can get paid from the government via tax credits.

Surely it would just be simpler and more cost effective to provide benefits for a parent to stay at home and look after the kid(s).

Yes, for sure we are being taxed too much. Even income tax was only a temporary measure, they said. You have to laugh, I suppose, or you could cry.
