geared
it's much more interesting a city than Wakefield too may i say.. No-one ever doubted that. but no-one asked for the most interesting city, just the most reasonable place to locate an administrative centre. All which is talking theoretically of course because none of this is actually going to happen!!!
Michael_N
Good on Barnsley and Doncaster for fighting for their corner and putting the needs of their residents 1st. Not everything is revolved around Sheffield and on the whole I can see their point - Yorkshire will have more clout and is much well known than just Sheffield on its own. Was never keen on Sheffield also covering Chesterfield and Worksop, apart from few workers who commute between these places, they have very little in common with the rest if South Yorkshire in terms of workforce and it always looked odd. Plus why was there a need for it to be called the Sheffield City Region?

Michael_N
Interesting development... A referendum could be held in a bid to decide the future of devolution in South Yorkshire. Plans to hold a community poll have been announced by Barnsley and Doncaster councils. Voters would be asked to choose between the government-backed Sheffield City Region deal or a proposed Yorkshire-wide deal. The plans are to be discussed by the councils on 9 November and a poll, if approved, would take place in December. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-41833806
Jeffrey Shaw
If it's unlawful, perhaps the Councillors concerned will be catalonised by HMG.
The Joker
Baaaaaaaaaarsnley’s only claim to fame is that it’s not Rovvrem. And Donny is jealous of Sheffield. Yes, really. Because we’re a city.
onlineo
This makes no sense. A Yorkshire deal cannot currently happen and should not be allowed to happen. The whole idea of the city region was to harness the power /lure /attraction of our big cities. With some of this extra money flowing into the surrounding towns. Personally I think Sheffield city region needs Barnsley, Rotherham, Chesterfield and maybe Doncaster to be a success. No idea what the point of a Yorkshire city deal would be. Surely it would just end up either giving the majority of the investment to Leeds or perhaps they want a stupid rural subsidy for some WEALTHY Yorkshire land owners. And there's the difficulty - both Barnsley and Doncaster are likely to view themselves as more a part of a Leeds city region than Sheffield. Sheffield has never been a regional centre / county town. Sheffield has never been a regional centre / county town. I don't think Doncaster have ever viewed themselves as part of Leeds City Region. Barnsley have always been a member of both Leeds and Sheffield City Regions, although their funding has always been through SCR.
