Mass shooting at Las Vegas music festival

Recommended Posts

Yep I realise that. My post was way too simplistic. What I meant was any president who said "Right, Guns are out of control, Im going to pursue all avenues to have them removed from the common man". Then lobby congress through the proper channels.

Having said that though, And I may be wrong here but can't a US Pres remove guns via one of their wonderful executive orders?

That way they completely bypass congress?

I have a bad feeling it will. In the next few years I can see more and more of these shootings happening.

Obama tried very hard to bring in gun controls, during his 2 terms in office, but the NRA is too powerful even for a President to overcome. I can't envisage a right-wing version like Republican Trump even trying to curb the sale of weapons to the public. Those Presidential executive orders cannot be used to change the US Constitution. The right to bear arms is the 2nd amendment of the US Constitution, and can only be changed by a unilateral act of Congess.

Agree with all of that. But it's not just the shadowing organisation that is the NRA - it's the members of said organisation, and gun owners in general. Half of the population will look at this terrible event like you and me might view a car crash. Its a tragic incedent but we aren't banning cars right? They're the same with guns - the price of freedom in their eyes, and they're happy to pay. Gun sales will go through the roof now.

ban the sale of automatic weapons

Stop selling guns to mentally ill sociopaths

Increase background checks and waiting times

But we know he’ll just send a few more incendiary tweets against his opponents and promise to MAGA##

Now what do you expect him to do ???

Your buddy (The Donald) has just been on the evening news, he has no intentions of altering the right to bare/bear arms in any way. The status quo remains.

I wonder how high the body count has to get before the US actually does something about it?

No, it really doesn't. Use your head for crying out loud - 50 dead and upwards of 400 injured.

The problem is, it is written into the constitution, the right to bear arms. AND the NRA have tens of millions of members, so doubtful the Trump would legislate against them.

Unfortunately, you are 100% right, losing their guns would be like losing a limb to most American gun owners. Thank God we have controls in Canada, although 3000plus miles of undefended border with the US, means guns can be had if you want one bad enough. However owning an unlicensed weapon is a serious offence here, especially a handgun or any firearm that can be concealed.

Its a wonder that the gunman managed to get at LEAST 10 rifles down the Las Vegas strip, through a busy casino (which usually has loads of security in) and up to a hotel room. All it takes was a big enough bag. Absolutely shocking.

If Sandy Hook didn't change gun legislation with a sympathetic President in charge, then what are the odds of Trump making any changes at all? Zero to none. In fact i'd assume its only a matter of time before he brings out the "if the victims had guns, they'd be able to defend themselves" line.
