I meant no disrespect to anyone here, but as I said: I wouldn't presume to lecture a British person about the NHS. Which by the way, I think is mighty fine.

True, the US is huge, not everything is the same everywhere. But there is more than one way to skin a cat and get what you need and not pay highway robbery prices. Frankly these drug companies are soulless and will charge whatever they think they can get away with.

I think that's the problem. For most Americans, this is a fact of life, but most Europeans have never had to deal with the naked avarice and bill padding at the patients' expense (literally!) and are surprised and (rightly)  disgusted.

I watched the Michael Moore thing- Sicko - and it highlighted the difficulty of a survivor of 9/11 struggled to get asthma medication (the old “pre existing condition” hustle amongst thing”). That struck a chord as I’m asthmatic. I know Moore is a bit one-eyed but there must have been some truth to it. Have a look if you haven’t watched it - you’ll know how true it is better than me.

In the meantime, have a look at this. Less one-eyed but I found it quite concerning and I don’t want this country going down that road. With brexit we are at risk of it. Trump is a sideshow - any US president will demand the same I think.

By insisting that the counter party open the health service up to private companies. By insisting that a health insurance market is created. There are a multitude of ways.

That’s not my experience buying over the counter in the US, and hugely at odds with guideline prices on reputable websites.

You don’t know what to do because you know I could produce the links in seconds.

At least you've answered the question. I don't agree with you but unlike another contributor who replies with insults or a patronising sigh you replied with a reasonable one.

Well your experience is not my experience. And my life long experience and that of my family and friends trumps whatever link you can post.

Jesus Christ. I wouldn't presume to lecture anyone here about the NHS.

I'm American, I live here. I have been wrangling with these blood sucking bean counters at the insurance companies, doctor's offices, emergency rooms and pharmacies my entire life.  And watching my parents and other assorted family do it when I was a kid.Try doing that when you're sick. Or your worried sick about someone dear to you.

So your healthcare system is a piece of crap but you still made time to support Lockdoctor’s insane predictions about a wonderful future of cut price American drugs when the evidence is that even basic drugs (Tylenol equivalent here can be as little as 19 pence for 12 tablets) cost an arm and a leg in the US.

You guys get fleeced every step of the way. We don’t want the same thing.

The NHS is not for sale.

Alchresearch has a point, over the last decade the far left have (sadly) become increasingly similar to the far right in tactics and attitude (especially in the U.S.), while the right have exploited this and often are the more rationally behaved in these situations.

Who are the far left when they're at home? When did standing against racism and fascism become far left?

Just look in a mirror. I really don't think you could get any more extreme far left than yourself. You hold so much hate for those that do not agree with you that it is sad to see.

The human cost of insulin in America http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-47491964

I've seen it, but it was a while ago. I'd say it's not quite so black and white and some things were somewhat out of context.  There is a lot of good in American health care (latest technology, prompt care, easy access to specialists)  but all that cost money. 😭

The insulin thing is just awful and I could go on. And on. And on. God help you if you fall between the cracks.

What ends up happening is people don't go to the doctor/forgo health screenings etc. even if they have insurance and/or money because they just don't want to pay. I've done this myself (the husband gets mad at me) and I need to stop. But old habits die hard and my parents rarely took us kids to the doctor unless one of us was bleeding or had a bone sticking through our skin.

If I were a Brit, I'd be worried too. I've been an open admirer of the NHS ever since I joined this forum. I sincerely wish we had something comparable. I have a nephew and his wife who currently live in London.  They love the NHS and want to permanently relocate to London. Partly because they love the city and easy access to the rest of Europe and partly because as Americans, they are accustomed to working their behinds off for everything they have. Low cost/free health care is just...they still can't quite believe it.

Your NHS is worth fighting for. Hopefully your politicians won't sell you out the way ours have.

When the left decided that anyone with an opinion to the political right, was a far right, white privileged, racist, homophobic, islamophobic, misogynist etc ... they likewise became the far left to those on the right. The political and social division in this country today is not just a construct of the political right, there is also an ever-growing, angry, delusional mob, of winey, self righteous, hatemongering leftists who see themselves(very much like the political elite), as being better than all others, most people generally regarded these days as being 'on the right' just simply can't abide that nonsense, and therefore you get people voting Farage, UKIP, Brexit Party when the ballot calls …. the same happened in the US when Trump was elected, wakey wakey !

Well it's not entirely a piece of crap. But there's definitely room for improvement! Yes, I completely understand not wanting to get fleeced, it isn't much fun. ☹️

I'll say it again, the NHS isn't perfect (what is) but it's worth fighting for.

* More real life experience*

Last November, I tripped and fell on my way into a local hospital for a doctor visit. I landed hard on my right knee.  Within 20 seconds I was surrounded by half a dozen medical personnel asking if I was ok and offering help. I waved them all away and limped inside, embarrassed to be the focus of all this attention.

The original doctor I'd come to see said he'd wait until the emergency folks were done with me.  An orthopedist saw me immediately. Like there was zero waiting. He examined my knee and ordered x rays. When those were inconclusive, he ordered a CAT scan. A radiologist looked at those as soon as the scan was done.

Don't worry, I was ok. But they did find some age related changes in my knee that I'd never have known about if I hadn't fallen in the first place. So, black cloud silver lining I guess.

I was done and upstairs in less than an hour.  I picked a good time too, because we'd satisfied the deductible on our insurance (being near the end of the year) and we didn't pay anything.

Tylenol does not cost an arm and a leg in the US.  I just bought some on Amazon Pantry for like $10-$12. They sell this stuff at the Dollar Store.

I challenge you to name just one extremist view that I hold. You can't do it.

Are you claiming that Trump isn't any of those things? Surely you're not that far gone?

How much per year does your insurance cost?
