See, I would say that this shows what a thin veneer liberal democracy is. It's useful to those in charge while it gives us the illusion of having a real say in what happens, but they are quite prepared to take it away if that suits them better. The defense department is currently led by acting secretary Christopher Miller, who was appointed in November, after Donald Trump abruptly fired Mark Esper. The situation at the Capitol has made it clear that the US Capitol police need more assistance, and those watching the situation are starting to ask why help hasn’t arrived. If things carry on like this Miller is going to find out just how seriously the people he's nominally in charge of take their oath of allegiance to the constitution (not the president). Also: Quote The Democratic governor of Virginia, Ralph Northam, said he was sending National Guard troops and state troopers to DC to respond to the violent situation at the Capitol. So it looks like Miller's attempt at supporting them will fail. And now: Quote A senior spokesperson for the Pentagon confirmed that the DC National Guard has been mobilized to address the violent situation at the Capitol. The spokesperson, Jonathan Hoffman, also said the acting defense secretary, Christopher Miller, has been in contact with congressional leaders.
