Virtually all politicians are opportunists, Trump isn't really a politician but he's definitely an opportunist , he's also an obnoxious human being.

Robert Byrd acted despicably when he started out, he then recognised he was wrong apologised and went on record with regard to his past mistakes.

His history has been dragged up in order to try to counter David Duke's support for Trump. Duke actually was a Grand Wizard, who was thrown out of the KKK for selling Klan membership details to an FBI informer.  He is a holocaust denying white supremist who has been convicted of fraud for which he served a fifteen month sentence.

He and Trump make a lovely pair.

Duke is still alive, Byrd has been dead for over thirteen years.  Desperate attempt at deflection by Trump supporters.

I wouldn't make excuses for either Duke or Byrd. To me they are human swamp debris, supported by human swamp debris.

Like Democrat Robert Byrd, Davis Duke was a Democrat, and a Grand Wizard of the KKK who ran for Presidential office several times. He later  joined the Republican Party, and fared no better.

In those days, when it was popular, Democrat Joe Biden was also opposing desegregation.

"Joe Biden said in a 1981 CNN interview that he opposed busing to desegregate schools and that he supported efforts to cut back on courts' ..."

The Democrats come by their racial roots, honestly, since the Civil War.  Biden promised to nominate a "black" woman as VP, didn't matter who, objectifying a candidate who did no more than check the skin color box, to impress the "blacks"., and garner their votes.

Trump denounced David Duke:

Well before the 2016 election!

But a candidate has no control over who votes for him. It's a free country.

Likewise the socialists have the guaranteed support from the Communists, wherever and whenever they run for office.

The Communists who are the brutal enemies of liberal democracy!

So be careful when you spit into the wind!  :)

Who's making excuses for anyone? My point was that what Byrd originally believed was despicable, but he admitted that, said so in his autobiography apologised and regretted his previous actions. Duke has done nothing to disavow his white supremist views and is a Trump supporter,

https://www.smh.com.au/world/donald-trump-declines-to-disavow-exkkk-leader-david-dukes-support-20160229-gn5wqr.html

Presumably you don't believe that people can alter their views and change their ways when they develop some knowledge and wisdom?

No remorse or regret is taken into consideration, condemned forever to eternal damnation. Good job you're a living saint then isn't it?

I'm a cynic when it comes to politicians of any party, any country and any ideology. With a few honourable exceptions they are out for their own self interest.

So I'm not supporting any particular side but what is perfectly clear to any rational unbiased person is that Trump is an obscenity of a man.

I have to question the ethics of anyone who would support him and wish to see him President again.

Biden is no saint either, he's a seasoned political operator with all the ' baggage ' that goes with that. He's also too affected by his age to carry out the work necessary.

At the moment the choice is as bad as the one we had here between Johnson and Corbyn, like a lot of people I couldn't vote for either of them.

The problem is that America is still the most powerful country on earth and their choice effects us all.

Both parties need better candidates.

Trevor will do anything to avoid a straight answer to why Trump asked the Secretary of State for Georgia  to "find " 11,780 votes or put together a false slate of electors -  ie rig the vote.

Surely not!  It's purely about Trump's performance in the White House.  If Biden had the myriad superb accomplishments that Trump managed then that would be another vote secured for the Democratic incumbent!  Let's just ignore the lengthy posts defending a defamer, a sexual abuser and a judge-defined rapist by rubbishing the victim of Trump's abuse, and the scratting about to conjure up something, anything, from the depths of the rabbit hole to excuse the criming that's resulted in four federal and state indictments.

It's not a cult at all.

But speaking of which, this is interesting, from a New Yorker report of the DeSantis campaign, mentioned by Josh Dawsey of the Washington Post:

Quote

Amazing nugget in this New Yorker DeSantis story: His team polled anti-Trump messages to see what might work. Found that 70 percent of Republicans would say covid lockdowns were bad in 2020. But if you said "Trump's covid lockdowns," 70 percent disagreed.

Slinny was asking for plain talk!

That WAS plain talk in the Sheffield we grew up in!  :)

I'll admit it wasn't an "absolutely fantastic", or "brilliant" response, but I was on my way to the "Loo" after sampling the latest "superb" vintage from the Loire Region, served of course with foie gras, and  the very decadent fillet of perch à la meunière and finished with a delectable gateau, all freshly purchased from the Late Shopper.

Alors s'il vous plaît pardonnez-moi!

(Hope it doesn't further dim my chances of a pint in Padder's Bar!  :)

Would that be the same Bill Clinton who cheated on his wife and lied under oath but is seen as some kind of hero, that Bill Clinton?

This is the crowd that wanted Slick Willy and his missus, back in the White House in 2016.

They never got over that!  :)
