Charity shops, is it a business

Recommended Posts

I'd like to see more transparency; charities publishing what income they receive, and where that money goes. Or at least a percentage type break down of all money going out of the charity.

I'm sure I heard there was one charity recently, where only around 10% of money received went to people that charity was setup to help.

Some charities don't get public donations to hand out but get funded by various sources. This one in particular is used by the DWP and has risen quickly gaining assets and other companies, Cambell Page is a new aquisition for them.

Perhaps that's how some charity shops work, but not the BHF. What gets donated to a shop gets sorted, priced, and sold in that shop. Anything particularly valuable goes to the Ebay site.

I'm surprised you've got anything left to sell then because at £2 for a paperback, this shop is like the Harrod's of Hillsborough. Though the Mind shop seems determined to run it close.

There are some at £1. Customers seem to like the paperbacks being fairly recent and in clean condition, because they do sell.

They get first dabs on what is donated, so nice little perk going on there.

I did wonder about this . ! If they pay what a customer would then fair enough but I'm not donating for staff to take the good stuff without paying .Im trying to help the charities . If I'm wrong about the staff then I apologise .?

At BHF they pay, as do the volunteers. I don't know how other charities work.
