Guest
Before anyone starts I'm a fully insured driver, always have been and always will be. I get that its vital to have an up to date MOT certificate as a matter of public safety, so its right the police enforce this, but I don't see why having insurance(with an a, unlike the title, DOH!) needs to be a police matter. Cyclone
Because it's a legal requirement to have 3rd party insurance because of the financial implications of injuring someone or damaging 3rd party property. And the way to enforce laws like "you must have 3rd party insurance" is by policing them, which generally ends up involving the police force. So its a matter of finance, like the police put the same importance when you fill out your tax form?
Cyclone
No, it's a matter of law. The police don't decide which laws they enforce, nor what laws are passed. Parliament passed the law because if you severely injure someone the cost could easily be in the millions, which most people can't afford. So it's a sensible law to have. The police simply enforce it, like they do with all laws.

Of course they decide which laws to enforce, there are lots of laws that they choose not to enforce.

El Cid
Really, like what? Driving on the pavement, smoking in a car next to a child, in Northern Ireland, paying for sex, the sale of alcohol to a person who is already drunk ..... blasphemy Edited October 29, 2017 by El Cid
Dimple
I must admit I haven't renewed my insurance since it ran out last week. Ill be sorting it at the end of next week though and luckily for me the roads I drive on have no ANPR cameras and I haven't seen a police car on them in years. El Cid
You only have to watch the TV crime programs, to see how many people they just let off, because they haven't got the time or the will to put people through the court system; maybe Tony Blair had it right with his planned automatic fine for drunken behaviour.
