Rouge
Hey, does anyone know what the original use of the Pagoda Bank building (Currently Chinese Fireworks) in the corner between London road and Cemetery road. Was it really a Barklays Bank? How come it is called pagoda and has Chinese references in the facade? Seems to be the same with the Sainsbury's (Lansdowne picture house) across the road as well. lazarus
It was BARCLAYS Bank, then it was a Thai Restaurant and intermittently the Chinese Firework Co.
Rouge
Thank you lazarus. If it was a Barclays bank originally, is there a reason why it was built with Chinese references in the facade?

DUFFEMS
Here's a link to a photo on Picture Sheffield showing the building as a bank, I recall it being built in the early to mid 50's: http://www.picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;s00211&pos=10&action=zoom&id=4195
parkydave
Yes that photo is how I remember it . I think the name you are referring too was added to the building much later , after 1966 .
fatrajah
I too remember it being built in the mid-1950s & that it was completed in 1956; the date of completion is inscribed on the London Road side of the building. It was originally a branch of Barclays Bank but I think it closed around the time the MSC building was completed.
