Baron99
Brilliant!, maybe the council are seeing sense? Sheffield's Green City status is as important (nearly) as it's association with steel. One can only presume that all those dead, dying, diseased trees have somehow made a miraculous recovery? Flexo
One can only presume that all those dead, dying, diseased trees have somehow made a miraculous recovery? Only about 1000 trees fell into those categories and people didn't disagree with felling those. The argument was around the other 5000 trees that they were trying to fell over the first few years. We now know that SCC had included a contract term that 17,500 trees - half of the street trees in Sheffield - must be felled over the course of the 25 year contract with Amey. SCC also lied and said they would only fell trees "as a last resort". This forced Amey to find spurious reasons for felling, such as a misplaced kerbstone or cracked tarmac, that are easy to deal with. Thanks to our tree protectors, SCC have backtracked from requiring that half of the trees be felled and it seems that Amey are now doing the job as they should have done it all along. The sad thing is that perhaps 4000 trees have been needlessly felled.

Flexo
Have any of them not been replaced? Of course not. They have planted saplings but one sapling does not replace a 100 year-old full canopy tree that is at the peak of the ecosystem services it is providing. Baron99
Out this morning & noticed a sign has gone up for work to start pruning the few trees on Gatefield Rd., at the junction with Abbeydale Rd., this Tuesday, 29 Jan. It tells the locals to remove their cars by 6:30am, so looks like an early start & possible traffic delays on that bit of Abbeydale Rd? dave_the_m
In the news today: SYP have paid out £24,300 to 7 tree protesters due to unlawful arrests: basically for misusing the 'violence and intimidation' clause of trade union legislation. The other news is that under the recently-agreed joint inspection program between SCC/Amey and STAG, 23 trees have so far been inspected - these are all ones which SCC earlier said had to be cut down as a last resort. For 19 of them, a couple of Amey workers have turned up and relaid the tarmac around the trees so that it's flat, and rebuilt the kerb so that it's straight. Typically a few hours work per tree, that SCC insisted to the High Court was impossible. The remaining 4 inspected trees have been deferred for further consideration, mainly because the kerb would have to deviate slightly.

I know that for some on here, they've been the target of some sly digs about the fact they're middle class (crime of the century ). I read about it here: https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2019/feb/04/sheffield-tree-protesters-win-wrongful-arrest-payout Sheffield City Council really have shown themselves in a bad light. alchresearch
Another link Sheffield tree protesters win wrongful arrest payout Quote Seven campaigners have been awarded £24,300 after the police watchdog ruled they were wrongfully arrested during tree-felling protests. They were held under the Trade Union and Labour Relations Act but charges against all seven were dropped. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) found South Yorkshire Police had no grounds for arrest. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-47116019 Edited February 5, 2019 by alchresearch
Baron99
Strange that SCC, (the likes of Bryan Lodge & Terry Fox) & Darren Butt of Amey are keeping their heads down? What no apology from them now that the protesters have been clearly exonerated? While I'm pleased for the protesters getting their payout, let's remember the compo is out the public purse, tax payers / council tax payers money. The likes of Dore, Lodge, Fox & Amey should be forking out. I hope the protesters take private actions against all those involved afterall, it's in the public domain regarding meetings between SYP, SCC & Amey how they were going to police matters & disrupt what is now considered to be lawful protesting.
