Council tree felling...

It's the tree protesters who should be apologising for stopping the council removing trees that were doing damage,

Sigh. Most of the trees the council were removing weren't causing damage.

After the issue turned into a public row, SCC set up an "Independent Tree Panel" to placate locals. The ITP would assess each "condemned" tree to decide whether it could be saved. In their reports for each street, they listed many trees which in their professional opinion didn't need to be felled. SCC/Amey then ignored the findings of the panel they themselves had set up, and felled most of the "recommended save" trees anyway.

Only later did it transpire that in the Streets Ahead contract with Amey (which SCC had been unlawfully hiding from public scrutiny for 6 years) Amey were contractually obliged to cut down and replace half of Sheffield's street trees over 25 years, regardless of whether they actually needed felling.

Whoever wrote / signed that contract needs sacking.

You mean like some senior Council executive?

Probably. Why not?

It's not the first time they've screwed up over contracts.

They are paid to get these things right.

Why shouldn't somebody take responsibility?

I agree entirely with you, Anna, but you know as well as I do that there is zero chance of this happening  - it's always 'someone who is no longer here's' responsibility.
