ez8004
After thinking really hard about it, I realised that simply taxing fuel does exactly that. You drive further, or less efficiently, or more often, you pay more tax. So scrap VED and replace it with a tax on fuel that raises exactly the amount lost. That doesn't work as it doesn't tax foreign HGV drivers who don't need to refuel in the UK.

How much tax would you consider to be reasonable on a litre of electricity?
El Cid
How much tax would you consider to be reasonable on a litre of electricity? Maybe we should tax the pollution/carbon? It will be quite complex to work out the tax via the tachograph, maybe taxing via the MOT mileage will be easier - they could use the same system to tax cars. This change will be massive, a great step forward for fair taxation. It would incentivise fraud if all this tax was via fuel duty. Great for climate change and producing goods locally. We could introduce a foreign vehicle tax payable on entry or before, that would be easy. ---------- Post added 24-12-2017 at 09:11 ---------- How much tax would you consider to be reasonable on a litre of electricity? If we want to encourage less polluting vehicles, then none, which is convenient as it's much harder to tax electric charging, at least when it's home charging. ---------- Post added 24-12-2017 at 09:12 ---------- How do you commit fraud when buying fuel at a petrol station? For most people avoiding paying VED is the far simpler option than somehow avoiding paying tax at a POS till.
geared
How far can a truck drive on a full tank? An extremely long distance, they can fit high capacity tanks on trucks designed to drive all over Europe.

rudds1
An extremely long distance, they can fit high capacity tanks on trucks designed to drive all over Europe. My first truck held around 1800 litres could fill up once a week and run all week on that
Cyclone
And I fill up my car about once a month, but that tells us very little about how far it can drive.

I was expected to do around 1500 miles a week and with those large tanks I did it easy with out filling up
El Cid
An extremely long distance, they can fit high capacity tanks on trucks designed to drive all over Europe. The tax on that would amount to pennies, but the bigger picture is that the Government want to tax all vehicles in the future.
