beer
I am interested in any information about the Portass family and their business interests in Sheffield. They manufactured machine tools and motor cars called H.F.G around Heeley and Abbeydale. I know during World War 1 they manufactured aero parts and even built around 20 complete aircraft. I believe the family home was at Norton, possibly Norton House, Chantry House or Norton Grange. I am helping the son of James Portass to research the family tree. Person6
Repost from Sheffield History group- Bob Trickett I am looking for information etc on Sheffield based companies that made aircraft parts during WW1 & WW2. I am especially interested in Portass C & son, who were located in Broadfield road. It is believed that they made various aircraft parts as well as a small batch of Sopwith Snipe aircraft during WW1. I believe that the Portass archives "inc aircraft parts drawings" were still in existence in the 1970's, can anyone confirm if they still exist ?. My main reason for asking, is that I am in the process of building a full sized repro of a Sopwith Snipe, and would like to build it to represent a Yorkshire built example. https://www.facebook.com/groups/247589428675212/permalink/1226727994094679/
