The Joker
why? we have 11,000 miles of coastline, even taking into account that quite a bit would be difficult for a boat to land and successfully deposit passengers you would still need thousands of people to patrol it. I’m thinking of voting YES on the poll. Surely we can get some proud patriots like the E-E-EDL to patrol our borders once the footy season is over

iansheff
So you think it would be a good idea for some volunteers to confront people in the midst of a criminal operation? Ok................. And not get paid for it as well.
Anna B
The volunteers will have no power to stop, interrogate or arrest, so I fail to see the point.

Annie Bynnol
We're an island for gods sake, we should be a fortress as far as keeping people out is concerned. We are islands with land and sea borders with EU and non-EU jurisdictions, different laws, duty, customs, travel regulations etc. We have never been able to create a fortress and never will. The current practice of closing ports to passengers, populating ports of entry with ordinary police and now and cooperating with our neighbours is not preventing illegal movement of people and goods. An increase in amateur spotters will not help unless there is an ability to respond which is currently being reduced.
