geared
Theyve got a job to do, and I dont blame them for doing it. A tunnel, albeit a pricey one would have been best. They were against the tunnel as well :hihi:

ANGELFIRE1
Meanwhile in London the Government are happy to spend billions on Crossrail and all the new tunnels required for it . Yet they cannot find the money to refurbish and reopen the Woodhead tunnel. Aye, and £60 billion for a fast(er) train from Birmingham to that Londonistan place. Well 20 minutes is faster, I suppose. Simply a vanity project. Angel1.

If it had been a bit of green belt, 6 lanes of motorway would have powered through it decades ago.

geared
It's a national park. All of them are strict, because they're national parks. They have stubbornly stood in the way of any work though, despite the fact the current network causes terrible pollution. Also aren't Glossop, Mottram, Hollingworth and Tintwhistle technically outside of the National Park boundary??

Jeffrey Shaw
The sensible thing there would be to remove the traffic lights at the A57/A628 junction, or even block it off to prevent stop/start traffic. But that's not where the main blockage is. See post #6.

The main problem id further up the hill at the traffic lights at the top , causing the tailbacks down at the bottom of Mottram.
