barleycorn
There is also Starmoreboss on Sharrow Vale Rd, the Wee Dram in Bakewell has already been mentioned and Mitchells.
Becky B
Don't immediately write off what the supermarkets sell. Balvenie Doublewood 12 is a rather nice whisky - very palatable (to echo what tzijlstra said), affordable if you don't want to spend a fortune on a present and is available in my local supermarket! Lurgh Mor
Starmoreboss is a very good suggestion. Always ready to give advice and won't attempt to up sell to you. Highland Park 12 y.o. Has been my choice of "gift" whisky for some years. An excellent all rounder with a unique quality; it is the most northerly of Scotch Whisky distilleries. Baron99
As already been posted, Mitchells up by the Meadowhead roundabout. I can vouch for them. Bought many a bottle in their store. A good selection right at the back & there's always someone there to point you in the right direction. My choice would be Glen Grant or Tamdhu, which also comes in a lovely shaped bottle. But as another poster says, don't discount the supermarkets. Sainsbury's does Balvennie Doublewood & if you're looking forward for something a bit different, try Waitrose for an Irish whiskey call Green Spot. Chelle-82
Depends what you are wanting to spend.. 15 yr old Dalmore is a very nice one, costs around £50 If that's too much then you can never go wrong with a glenfiddich, costs vary but I recommend 15yr - 20yr old. If you really want to push the boat out then Macallan is what I would say the nicest whiskey outside of 'rock star' prices But I also would suggest visiting Mitchells Wine Merchants, excellent knowledge.. Flanker7
We watch supermarket whisky prices all the time. They have almost all the brands at £30+ for 3 weeks so they can shout about a reduction to £25 for 1 week. If you've got the time - wait until the price comes down. My tip is Waitrose who sometimes discount more expensive brands. I once saw Green Spot at £25.

Ooo, we went on a tour around the Highland Park distillery last year. Dad's Christmas pressie was a no brainer!
