TimeBandit52
Hi Moirahyde. John was my father and did indeed live with the Bellamys on Abbydale rd. Mable and Joe retired to Casleton. And I have found and visited there grave. I have searched for Thomas grave and found it to be in Burngreave cemetry ,i got the grave number and area but as no marker was on it I couldn't find it. Many questions about him. Died in 1917 but what of, why was he not involved with the war, or was he? I think he died in a workhouse and is in a porpers gave. Any more info is appreciated. David. Moirahyde
Hi David, You could order the death certificate for Thomas from the GRO. The reference is June quarter 1917, Sheffield, 9c 696. If Thomas was in the Fir Vale Union, the hospital part of it was separated from the rest of the buildings in 1906. As Thomas was a boiler maker, he might have been exempt from taking part in the war, as were steel makers and coal miners. Here is the marriage: 1 August 1909, St.Mary's, Bramall Lane. Thomas Downing, 20yrs, bat, Boiler maker of 11/8 Hermitage St. father, Thomas Downing, engine tenter. Alice Poyser, 20yrs, spin, of 11/8 Hermitage St. father, William Poyser, Joiner. 1911 census - court 3 1h, Gower Street, Sheffield. Thomas Downing, head, mar, 22yrs, Boiler rivetter, born Sheffield. Alice Downing, wife, 22yrs, born Sheffield. Thomas Poyser, son, 4yrs, born Sheffield. Married 1 year, 2 children born alive, 1 still living, 1 died. (Son William aged 13 months, died at 2/2 Clun St. buried 14 Nov 1910 and is in the same grave as his father Thomas). Moira.

Moirahyde
Hi David, To find births, marriages and deaths you can use 'FreeBMD'. The site is free, but, Sheffield is split into sections, Sheffield, Ecclesall Bierlow and Wortley. I usually search Yorkshire West Riding to narrow it down. There is also the 'Sheffield Indexers' site which is also free. Then there is 'Family Search' also free but you have to register. I have a subscription to Findmypast, which has good coverage of the Yorkshire area. Thomas Downing, baptised 10 July 1889, All Saints, Brightside, Sheffield. Parents, Thomas and Sarah of Carlisle St. East, Engine tenter. Here are some census entries for the Downing's. 1901 census - 152 Carlisle Street East, Sheffield, Brightside Bierlow. Thomas Downing, 56yrs, Engine tenter hard stationary, born Bolton on Dearne, Yks. Sarah Downing, wife, 55yrs, born Barnetby, Lincoln. Joseph Downing, son 16yrs, General labourer, born Thurnscoe, Yks. Thomas Downing, son, 12yrs, born Sheffield. In the 1891 census the family are living at 3 court 12 Carlisle St. East. As well as Joseph and Thomas, there is daughter Emma, 17yrs, born Thurnscoe, Yks In 1881 the family are at Back Lane Cottages,Thurnscoe, Yks. Thomas Downing, 35yrs, engine driver, wife Sarah 34yrs. Children: Annie 13, born Mexbro, Emma 7 born Thurnscoe, Sarah Ann 3 born Thurnscoe and John Edward 5 months, born Thurnscoe. In 1871 they are living at 25 Marshall St, Sheffield. There is also a daughter Mary aged 5yrs. Using FreeBMD, there is a marriage in the December quarter of 1864 for a Thomas Downing to a Sarah Brown. Ref: Sheffield 9c 661. I can't find this marriage online. Moira.
