I suppose the terraced houses round the area were built from it. There is so much sandstone under Crookes that the saying is that the houses were built out of their own cellars. A good thing in view of the logistics of getting building materials up the hills. Most have now been filled-in, the last I think was the huge one on the Bolehills, part of which became a playing field/playground around 1950.
