theimposter
Hello! As part of my research I wondered if anyone has any info about the Alexandra? It was run by William then Emily Hattersley between 1953-1983. Were they married or was Emily another relative? Any info appreciated!
XC60
unless I,m mistaken the Alex was owned by Walter Hattersley who also owned Westfield Motors on West St and Queens Garage on Queens Rd. I do stand to be corrected.
hillsbro
The Kelly's directories I have for 1951 to 1971 give Walter Hattersley as licensee of the Alexandra in Exchange Street - see here. The 1973 directory gives Mrs E. Hattersley as licensee and the address is now given as Castlegate. The marriages index confirms that a Walter Hattersley married an Emily Hird in Sheffield in 1943. It seems that Walter died aged only 56 in 1972 while Emily died aged 93 in 2002.
XC60
Yes that sounds about right. I worked for Walter from 1962 - 1969 at Queens Garage, when Westfield Motors went into liquidation He was a really nice guy and a good man to work for.
