Fitzalan square regeneration

The trees do nothing but provide cover for anti-social behaviour and crime.

trees do nothing but provide cover for anti-social behaviour and crime???

They don't, for examples, help greatly with pollution, provide welcome shade on sunny days, nesting for wildlife, look nice etc, etc?

And, while a tree may occasionally provide cover for a crime, how much more is that the case for other city objects, like cars, and buildings? Presumably we also need to remove all cars and building from the city center??

nope, the criminal is responsible for the crime, authorities including the council and police are responsible if they don't take measures to prevent crime - like making the environment less appealing to criminals.

You're putting the cart before the horse. The reason the square is run down is because it's badly designed. It's cut off on one side by the tram lines, surrounded by noisy, polluted, congested roads, there's precious little else to attract people to stay. It's closer to the equally (if not more) delapidated Castle Market area than the more active heart of the city. In that environment, when the passing pedestrian traffic falls, then people who want a quiet, isolated spot to 'do business' will move in. The tree canopy is a minor issue compared to all that. The redevelopment of the area is curing some of the traffic problem, making the space more accessible and comfortable for pedestrians and cycles. But the square is very definitely the right place for trees, because they create a more pleasant environment and soak up pollution, amongst other things. Human beings like green spaces: they didn't evolve in concrete cubes.

Eccy was clearly only speaking in terms of the trees on Fitzalen Square, not trees everywhere......

It's particularly clear when anti PFI comments are made in relation to Fitzalan Square, which as we all know is a council redevelopment scheme, so the trees weren't touched because of "the PFI" or some weird "Amey conspiracy" as some would suggest.

Actually, the trees were removed by Amey under the terms of the PFI: the Planning Committee decided it had no power to stop the felling of the trees.

Not everyone was convinced, mind you!

A link to the relevant Planning Committee minutes would be useful to evidence this.

There's a fair amount of info HERE, see the various objections and the Delegated Officers Report.

It's also stated that Planning Permission is not required for the felling of the 4x Plane trees.

See also the report on the trees towards the bottom of the previous link

2nd link updated, works OK at the moment 16/3/18 @ 11.15

Document unavailable! Looks like the link changed as it seems I can get at it from the list the first link provides.

As for the site, I admit it allows more light now than it did before but that should be only a secondary consideration AFTER the benefits the trees provided.

As has been stated by many on this thread already, the trees weren't removed, but the work was done to facilitate the council redevelopment of Fitzalan Square.

Do you gave a problem with facts?

So is there some reason those particular trees don't reduce pollution, produce oxygen, look nice, provide a habit for wildlife, block noise, create shelter, etc?

Are they magic and somehow only provide cover (what, behind the trunks?) to criminals?

Fitzalan Square has been a bin for decades - certainly all my lifetime.

It's a shame people can't see the positives in this redevelopment.
