South Road shops

Recommended Posts

Moving from Eric Smith's towards Hoole Street -Otto Wegne a Barber and his wife was a chiropodist; Willie Burns electrician; Maypole Dairy; Edgar Sidall chemist, and the Post Office on the corner was run by Harriet Glaves. Bob Clark purchased 14lb. blocks of beef dripping for his chip pan, and were they good, pure beef dripping rendered at Eric Smith's, he also rendered pure lard. Eric Smith purchased another shop In Burgoyne Road and another on Middlewood Road.

Not quite right.

Bob Clark’s was a wet fish shop with no shop window, just open to the elements when he was open.

All the fish,Conway mussels etc were displayed on a big marble slab.

When I was at the bus stop on South Road I often passed the fish box deliveries ,packed in ice and left on the pavement until Bob opened up.

The name of the chippie owner is on the tip of my tongue....get back to you unless somebody remembers.

It was Bottomleys fish and chip shop

Sorry, once more my age plays tricks. The chip shop belonged to Mr Harold Bottomley.

I should know this because although I was born at Walkley Street in 1938, in 1944, the year of the blitz, we move to Hoole Street between Walkley Street and Whitehouse Road.

A while back, on another strand, someone kindly posted this list (below) of the 1972 shops along South Road - it might jog some of our fading memories.

My mom worked at Hawkesfords, Bowaters, and Woolshop at various times, I went to St Mary's school and Ebenezer. I also remember many of the other shops mentioned - potted meat from Gierschick, first hair cuts at Blinks, sweets for school reading time from Candy Shop, a rabbits foot for luck in my 11+ from butchers - oh so many to remember. We lived down Industry Street.

Thanks for this thread RAPXV ,I hope you won't mind if I add a little more about the Rose House pub and its eccentric landlord (1967 ish) Bernard Frith , as stated in an earlier post Bernard was a practical joker and this being the case his pub was always full with regulars anticipating the next episode to erupt.

One of Bernard's party pieces involved a pair of very large Sheffield made tailors cutters scissors and involved many a new customer who just happened to wear a collar and tie.

Bernard would pull the unsuspecting gent a pint while pretending to admire his tie he would then lean over the bar so as to feel the texture of said garment then!!! as quickly with his other hand snip of the tie with the scissors .

This action always brought the house down from the assembled regulars but often lead to out rage from the bloke who had lost half his tie, however Bernard as usual usually got away with it and every one ended up laughing.

The snipped of ties grew by the week over time and were displayed on a rail behind the bar ( inc my best one from Winstons).

Another trick of Bernards involved a diving suit , if a stranger entered the pub and it happened to be pithing down outside Bernard would go around the back and put on a full diving kit inc helmet and flippers he would then re enter the pub from the front door stand next to the newcomer and declare that the weather was not fit to turn a cat out , again the reaction from the unsuspecting customer had to be seen to be believed.

Bernard formed the Rose House Tommy Talker band ,A band that every one had to be in whether they wanted to be or not, he would lead this band from pub to pub around Walkley causing a great atmosphere wherever they ended up.

It goes without saying that the Rose house was always busting at the seams every night when Frithy was landlord even though he actually got away with stunts that would have ended up with a broken nose for ordinary mortals.
