Old fishing tackle shops

My first fishing memories are of buying a tanners worth of maggots from Bennets original tackle shop on Winter Street so we could fish for sticklebacks in Weston Park pond.

We then went to Steve Calcotts near the railway station and Mrs Thackerys by the market.

laterly it was Billy Clarkes at the bottom of Sharrow Lane.

What about Calverts? They were around the bottom end of the markets as well.

remember bennetts when it was on howard street,there used to be one at darnall on the left,just undeer the bridge,then another appeared round the corner on the main road

There was one on Newhall Road, just down from the snooker hall. Stamfords I think it was called, young chap called Keith had it.

i think i remember one on edmund road at the bottom on right hand side in the 60s called BANKSIDES i used to wonder if this was the real name of the owners ,

thackerys was my relations they are long gone dont know if the name carries on any where but aunty eidith thackery was a wonderful person,had great holidays with them in the camper van and the poodles... shame ....

Dawsons at malin bridge pint of mixed maggots no sawdust bag of castors then off for a day at the dam flask,always remember sending me mam into Dawsons for a guzunder float and some master bait she wer not happy when a the fisherman in the shop burst into tears wi laughter and explained how shed been had.

In the 50's there use to be a fishing tackle shop on a road between the end of Bramhall Lane and Little London road. Anybody remember it and what it was called? My grandfathers coach use to pick fishermen up from there and take them to Boston on a sunday.
