tinfoilhat
A while ago a friend of mine was quoted £120 to get rid of two sofas by a licenced wasted removal company. Obscene price, especially when he got another quote of £30 from a man and van . no one is going to pay rip off charges like that when they can get the job done for a Quarter of the price. He could have got a skip for £90! Maybe he should drink less and shop around more.
Guest makapaka
If you ring the council they will take 3 items for something like £25.

I take it then that the man with a van wasn't licenced? Congratulations to your, ahem, 'friend' for contributing to the fly tipping problem. You He was also ripped off, you he could've had them removed for £21 by Veolia. https://www.veolia.co.uk/sheffield/collections-home/collections-home/bulky-item-collection-service

How much did your friend pay for the two sofas to be delivered to him originally, and for the sofas themselves? Disposal is part of the whole lifecycle that your friend became responsible for when he acquired those items. He cannot expect them to just disappear for nothing when they cease to be of value to him. Of course, though, people don't see their responsibilities like that and may try to avoid funding the disposal costs of their possessions. It would be better to charge the costs up front via the retailers so they are paid when the item is purchased and disposal is free. We'd remove the fly tipping problem and reduce consumption. It would have been funny if the sofas had been tipped on Penistone's lane..
