Factory canteens

The canteen at the Sheffield Skillcentre in the 1980s was good. You paid £2.50 a week out of your wages and you got a hot two course lunch every day. Breakfast was pay as you go and l think toast and marmalade was 9p.

Still, this was the eighties, the era of me me me, and there were people that moaned about having to pay £2.50 a week so the canteen was closed down and we had to go to the chippy where it cost up to £2.50 a day for lunch.

Thanks a lot

Not sure if they were a Sheffield company but was it Gardner-Merchant ? I used to work as a contractor at Bassett's. When they took over the canteen, prices increased the quality decreased and nasty attitudal serving staff too.

That's the one. Somehow presumed they were a Sheffield company, must say the quality was first class.
