iansheff
Reading that Mothercare are to close 50 stores and 800 jobs at risk. The mums the reporter spoke to yesterday said they bought their baby stuff in the likes of Primark and the supermarkets. Mothercare, they told her, was too pricey. Are these companies closing due to being greedy, or is it because companies using the Internet to sell products are more affordable due to having a central depot and not having to pay large amounts in rents and taxes for shops. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-44148937
geared
Bit of both really. It's a highly competitive retail environment, those that can't adapt are going to fail. The demand is still strong, they are just being beaten on price. Customers aren't stupid, if they can get the same item somewhere else for less they won't shop with you. ECCOnoob
To be clear, M&P are going into administration but they are not going completely. The current report says that they are closing six of their stores (none of which appear to be round here) and keeping the remaining 26 trading as normal. Same old story really. Even their owners has been quoted saying that "...in branch sales are dwindling due to the fact that more customers are chosing to shop online..." Albert the Cat
I found Mothercare's and Mamas and Papas' products that they sold to be great quality. I am a firm believer of you get what you pay. It seems the majority simply can't seem to afford what they sell. John Lewis it is then.
geared
The big supermarkets have really taken a bite out of their market sector, the stuff on offer is decent enough and it's more convenient as you're already in store doing the weekly shop anyway. Janus
Imagine if every kind of item sold was online, and it had always been that way. Then one day during a conversation , one of these online traders announces that they are going to open a shop. One of the first questions to be asked would be, "What about the overheads"?
