What is so good about Sheffield City Centre?

Recommended Posts

That's right, or a town hall. in fact the criteria are not published and there is no automatic route to city status. It's granted by the crown.

Traditionally, cities did have cathedrals, but there's no actual rule. There are some cities which do not have cathedrals, and there are some towns which are not cities which have cathedrals.

So, Blackburn, Rochester, Guildford and Southwell are examples of towns with cathedrals which are not cities.

And Brighton has no cathedral but is a city. Cambridge has no cathedral but is is a city. Same with Hull, Lancaster, Leeds, Nottingham, Plymouth, Preston, Salford, Southampton, Stoke, Sunderland, Swansea and Wolverhampton.

Lancaster has a cathedral.

BTW - How did Sheffield get city status? Doesn't 'feel' vibrant or appear big enough to be a city. I know a city must have a town hall and a Cathedral, but then this would mean Canterbury is also a city?

4th or 5th biggest city in England doesn't "feel big enough"... Well, I suppose all the smaller cities could be redesignated as towns, or perhaps your "feeling" should be used to assess them for size?

Shows how much notice you take of what’s actually happening in town.

There has been an alive after five initiative running in Sheffield for some time now. Some of the new shops on the Moor open till 7. See: http://www.sheffafter5.com

With the greatest of respect, you are shooting yourself in the foot here. This is a list of all the shops that have signed up to this huge initiative. Virtually all of them close by 6. One or two notable exceptions are a Primark and Poundland on the Moor, and TK Maxx. Oh . . and an honorable mention to superdrug at the station.

If you call that an active 'Alive after Five' initiative, I'm a banana. Frankly, it's embarassing and the proof of the pudding is in the fact that there are next to no shoppers in town in the early evening.

It's an initiative - it won't happen overnight mate. You will have to be patient.

Why are you feeling embarrassed ?

"Known as the Steel City, many innovations were developed locally, including crucible and stainless steel, fuelling an almost tenfold increase in the population in the Industrial Revolution. Sheffield received its municipal charter in 1843, becoming the City of Sheffield in 1893"

For everyones information - Sheffield became a City before it became trendy.

Why would anyone want to come to a desolate <removed> city centre like Sheffield? We have Meadowhall for that, where you can remain cool in the summer or warm and dry in the winter, don't have beggars and spice heads lurking in every doorway and feel in a safe environment - with free parking and leisure facilities too.

People drag down Meadowhall no end, but I don't think they realise just how much it attracts in investment and people coming to the area.
