Calahonda
It's an old and deeply flawed argument, the real gateway drug is alcohol. Not tobacco then, I’m surprised because there are many occasional drinkers, but very few occasional smokers.
hobinfoot
It's an old and deeply flawed argument, the real gateway drug is alcohol. The people I'm talking about have worked for years with addicts. I'm not qualified to say if the argument is flawed or not. But they say cannabis is a gateway drug and I've no reason to doubt them. After all they work in the sector. Cyclone
Nobody who actually studies patterns of drug addiction claims that cannabis is a gateway drug. ---------- Post added 17-06-2018 at 20:27 ---------- I thought sales of alcohol required a licence. You have to be 18 to consume it, and you if sell it to someone who has too much, you could be in trouble. That's a very different set of laws to a can of coke. Yes, sales. That's specifically why I didn't mention selling it. You don't have to be 18 to consume it at all, there's no minimum age. ---------- Post added 17-06-2018 at 20:31 ---------- The thread is about legalising cannabis use and production, this must mean controlled production, pricing and distribution, does it not? It’s not about back garden greenhouses growing a few pots of weed or bath tubs full of gin. All the taxation revenue derived from legally produced cannabis could go to the NHS, sounds like a plan. Controlled pricing? Not necessarily, market price could be left to itself, with an appropriate sales tax applied. Sales and distribution could be controlled under existing tobacco regulations. apelike
Nope, you don't... you can grow for personal use, it's Bartering or selling tobacco products that is regulated and taxed. Well according to this article you do: https://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/latest-news/333088/Government-tax-on-tobacco-plants
Ghozer
Well according to this article you do: https://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/latest-news/333088/Government-tax-on-tobacco-plants Then it's changed since last time I looked into it... not many around saying you have to pay tax (that seems to be from 2013) most articles are from before 2013... looked through HMRC's own website and eventually found it, the wording they use is.. Usually, you need to pay HMRC as soon as the products become liable to the duty. Products become liable to the duty when they either: - enter the UK from overseas - reach a smokeable condition during manufacture so it seems that you should, though how are they going to know/police it etc? - but also, could you not argue that you do not 'manufacture' a plant... and by that statement, you should not pay tax on rolling tobacco, as it's not manufactured (it's grown and cured) - but cigarettes etc are manufactured... but then you should pay tax as-soon as you roll it to smoke - then if you're using a pipe you technically wouldn't have to pay... ^^ Just shows how screwed up and stupid the system is

Ghozer
Have any of you read the OP ? You've all gone off on a tangent I believe it's still relevant discussion, as it's talking about the current rules surrounding currently regulated substances, and thus how they MIGHT potentially deal with legalising Cannabis or part-of... Ontarian1981
Only under State law though, it still remains illegal under National or Federal law. Not all Americans go cruising from State to State, despite what is seen in movies etc. Folks who smoke it up will be quite happy enjoying their joints in their hometown without harassment from the cops.
