Top Cats Hat
Is it possible for someone to find out if a family member has a criminal record? - preferably for free?! In theory, yes, in practice you will need to demonstrate that you have a need to obtain such information. This is usually because you are planning to employ someone or are a statuary body checking applications to foster or adopt children. General nosiness is not grounds for a search. It will cost you about £40 and you will have to provide proof of your identity.

Daven
You can search criminal records on the Ancestry website but they are all over 100 years old. I take it you are wanting to find out about someones past who is still living ?
Roms
No the person needs to to apply for a basic disclosure Scotland themselves. Any enhanced DBS application needs to be done because of work or education requirements.
Cyclone
The person in question probably knows and doesn't need to apply for anything.
