Businesses - following your moral compass or breaking the law?

Recommended Posts

The 3rd time it happens it will be obvious that this is a lie. (If it's not trivially obvious to just phone up from another number 30 minutes later and ask if a room is available...)

Catching stupid people out in stupid lies is really easy.

So if you ring up a hotel and find it booked out, do you just keep ringing? Do gay couples have more time on their hands than me or what?

So I'll ask again, this freedom to choose who to do business with. Are you suggesting that choice could be based on the protected characteristics?

People choose all the time, should you employ a pregnant woman or would an older person fit into a modern work environment.

If you were looking for a lodger, would I/tinfoilhat/Penistone999 be ok, would you rule out a young person or an old person, a black person?

They can't tell you're gay over the phone right, so his last excuse was "double booked". And if you're suspicious about the motives then checking again 30 minutes later to confirm your suspicions is quite likely isn't it?

Both good examples of totally illegal behaviour.

I've no idea what your point is.

Erm, No, not really. I'll ring another hotel up - unless I'm specifically looking for a law suit and not a weekend away.

The ones that ended up were both blatant in the homophobia and stupid.

I have owned/operated businesses for many years, most connected with a customer side to it. What a foolish position to take, to refuse service to someone for anything that was legal. We are happy to sell to any religion, any ethnicity, any age and any sexual orientation.

It is tough enough today to survive in business without people spreading the word that your company is also in the business of discriminating !

Once you bring personal beliefs into a public related private business you are tying one hand behind your back on the road to success.

Political opinions and religion are a matter of choice. Race, nationality, sexuality, colour, sex, gender, hair colour, these are not choices and so discrimination based on them is not allowed.

So you can choose not to serve the porn industry, EDL or Christians, you can't choose not serve Women, Irish and Hetro people.

I don't think that can be right Cyclone, religion or belief is on the list of protected characteristics, as odd as it seems.

Well, that's probably really easy to declare when you've no danger of ever being turned away due to discrimination.

And remember, this 'double booking' excuse is at the point at which you've arrived. Not weeks before when you can easily make an alternative booking.

But double bookings can occur, and at some very big hotels too. Not because of some homophobic/racist/etc agenda, just good old fashioned incompetence!
