Living beyond our means, or just poverty?

Recommended Posts

I agree, but what annoys me is that there has been no incentives for savers for over 10 years, with interest rates at almost 0%. Meanwhile borrowing money has never been cheaper.

Consequently borrowing is now at the highest level it's ever been, to the point where it could spark a new financial crisis.

Why is the government sitting by, while the banks encourage bad habits?

There hasnt been incentives? Once you have some in savings then the rest in the stock market or bonds or gilts, all of which have had quite reasonable returns in the last ten years...

Not this again.

You started a thread on this in June where you said "The cost of a basic funeral is around £4,000".

Plenty disagreed, with statistics to prove it, and as usual you disappeared.

Only quoting what it said in the News report.

And average of £4078 according to this link, twice that in London.

Anyway the point was, according to a TV News report, people are being left unburied because family can't afford it.

Are you saying they're making it up?

Are you going to answer the point addressed before? There is a thread open already where this has been done for you so please dont take this offtopic when theres a better place for you to discuss funeral costs...

What question would that be?

This is not off topic when it is related to poverty, and has been recently in the news.

In response to alchresearch I have also provided a link which 'proves' the average cost of a funeral is £4078.

You could well be right, that may be the average cost but that doesn't mean they can't be done much cheaper.

Average costs are just that and apply to everything we buy.

We have had growth in most years for the past few decades, but back in the 1980s PPP growth would rise by around 500 pts per year, but in recent years PPP growth is around 100 pts per year; we are falling behind other countries.

Gross Domestic Product, based on the Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) methodology, not on market exchange rates. Values are given in USDs. These notional figures have been taken from the International Monetary Fund's World Economic Outlook (WEO) Database, April 2017 Edition.

Global growths are slowing, in the west more so. Our standard of life is pretty high tho on a sliding scale.

So now you're saying "average" rather than "basic"?

The number of Pauper's funerals have risen 70% in 3 years, with many families unable to afford even the most basic costs. The cost of a basic funeral is around £4,000

GDP per capita PPP growth took a nosedive in 2007/8 and only recovered to previous levels in 2015, other countries, such as Germany.

Germanys economy took the same nosedive but their economy recovered by 2011, the recovery was also stronger.

You have to look over a longer period & compare that period with a similar longer period, historically speaking. Western countries are hitting the wall.
