grinder
I remember one saying used when I was a lad but not being French speaking I must apologize if it's rude... If they'd received nothing, they'd say they gotten what sounded like "San fairy-Ann", was this really French ? hillsbro
Hi - no you are not being rude... It comes from the French "Ça ne fait rien" meaning "That means / does nothing". It was probably picked up by British soldiers in France during the First World War - I knew at least one old soldier who used this expression. It can be compared with the expression "Sweet Fanny Adams" as the initials of the English version are the same - S.F.A.
Puffin4
I believe Sweet Fanny Adams was a polite way of saying Sweet F--- All. To be pedantic, the initials are not the same, just the sounds. C cedilla is not S. Mike Edited December 14, 2010 by Puffin4

Perhaps a little too pedantic, bearing in mind that hillsboro was clearly referring to the initials of San Fairy Ann..
