Obelix
I didn’t start the debate. The evidence is in the public domain though, and an intelligent person would have no problem finding it and analysing it. Nothing unnecessary about my comment. Take a look in the mirror instead. The track record of posters is such that they make comments you find the source that actually says the opposite of what they claim and then they say no that's not what I meant Google it. Most savvy posters on here will therefore require people to provide a curation so you don't have to waste time looking for stuff that in fact doesn't exist. In any debate the onus is on the proposer of a motion to provide the evidence. It's not on the rest of the debaters to Google it. ---------- Post added 26-09-2018 at 07:35 ---------- Life expectancy progress in UK 'stops for first time' http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-45638646 Which is a new defition of backwards. Ms Macbeth
I wondered when I read the title, as I'd heard on the radio it had stopped increasing. Not quite the same.
Anna B
It's going down in some parts of the UK. https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/life-expectancy-scotland-falls-first-13307737 I've always thought it was unfair that because some people live well into their 90s, that whole rafts of people who die in their 70s will soon have to work until 68. https://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/2014/apr/16/commonwealth-games-2014-glasgow-lowest-life-expectancy-uk
alchresearch
Its not surprising considering we have weekly heath warnings on drink and obesity in the media, like this from a few days ago: Obesity to eclipse smoking as biggest cause of cancer in UK women by 2043 https://www.theguardian.com/society/2018/sep/24/obesity-to-eclipse-smoking-as-biggest-cause-of-cancer-in-uk-women-by-2043 Whitehall asks councils for ‘trailblazing’ ideas to fight childhood obesity https://www.localgov.co.uk/Whitehall-asks-councils-for-trailblazing-ideas-to-fight-childhood-obesity/46081 Its very easy to just blame cuts in social care, but there are other factors like the above to blame. melthebell
good who the smeg wants to live that long, you slowly die from the likes of alziemers etc being in care, not remembering who your family are. Its only advances in science and medicine that make us live as long as we do and theres only so much they can do
Cyclone
Life expectancy is now going down in large parts of the UK for the first time ever. So now we're not all living longer, can we retire earlier please? If retirement had been linked to life expectancy going up then your request would be reasonable, but it hasn't been has it. ---------- Post added 26-09-2018 at 13:35 ---------- To be fair, you demanded a source last night and were rewarded with multiple ones. Google is available to everyone you know. Even to sceptics, and rude people. It's not unreasonable to expect a link from the OP though. Why should we have to look up the 'facts' that Anna is talking about. ---------- Post added 26-09-2018 at 13:36 ---------- In much the same way that a smaller increase in public spending is seen as a cut... I don't think that inflationary pressures apply to life expectancy... ---------- Post added 26-09-2018 at 13:38 ---------- Re: the actual news - it's likely that there's a split if you look into the evidence deeply enough. For the more wealth off, educated and health conscious, life expectancy continues to rise, for the poorer, less educated and less health conscious, life expectancy stagnates or falls. Overall for the first time recently this causes no overall change when taken on aggregate.

Cold nasty winter in 1981-82 We had a nasty cold winter this year a beast from the East... and the coldwave in 2017. Correlation is not causation but everyone goes oooh Tory Austerity for both... with no causal link....
Anna B
If retirement had been linked to life expectancy going up then your request would be reasonable, but it hasn't been has it. Has it not? Haven't we all been told that retirement age has to go up 'because we're all living longer.' I recall this being said many times by Tory politicians. It was their go-to excuse for putting the retirement age up.. Edited September 26, 2018 by Anna B

This is bizarre. You understand that life expectancy isn't a limit or a set target right? Every year people die who are younger than the average life expectancy, and others exceed it.
