truman
Yet the Scandinavian countries are renowned for having the best welfare and health/wellbeing provision in the world, and frequently come top in Education too. They must be doing something right. I believe many of them only work 4 days a weeek too. Have you seen the tax rates?

Anna B
Have you seen the tax rates? Have you seen ours? When all the hidden taxes and stealth taxes are added on it's a lot more than you think. And we have rubbish public services to boot.

Costa Rica this year topped the Happy Planet Index rankings with a substantial lead, yet the average citizen of Costa Rica works 2212 hours per year, the second highest in the world. Cyclone
If you read my post, how can the stock not cline if the utility companies are no longer in the FTSE 250? I just checked, your post doesn't mention utility companies. But if the companies were nationalised they would no longer be ON the stock market, so they would have no impact on the stock market value. ---------- Post added 16-10-2018 at 20:44 ---------- The stock market didn't 'plunge' because of anything May did. The stock market went down because of fears of the escalating trade war between the USA and China, which affected stock markets all over the world. They went down because of the risk that tariffs would have on the free market. I have weekends, holidays, paternity rights and sick leave and I live in a capitalist country. Yes, we need compassionate, not unbridled, capitalism and we probably haven't got the balance quite yet, but the answer isn't all out socialism. It is simply not true that those things can only come from socialism, which, after all, is about social ownership of the means of production. Luckily I haven't argued for all out socialism. I AM arguing that austerity is an ideological crusade for the tories, it's not about fixing the deficit, it's about making the state smaller, selling off state assets, empowering big business, oh and if they happen to get personally enriched in the process, well, nobody gets hurt, right. ---------- Post added 16-10-2018 at 20:46 ---------- They may have claimed but were they ever paid? Seriously. Were you asleep when the expenses scandal was all over the news. Yes, that particular claim was paid, along with thousands more dodgy claims, and given that it's been going on probably for 100+ years, many, many more that we will never know about. I would imagine the value of the shares would dramatically decrease if there was a threat of nationalisation - not good news for anyone with a pension. But you admit that it has helped to dramatically reduce the deficit? How has austerity empowered big business? ---------- Post added 16-10-2018 at 20:55 ---------- I just checked, your post doesn't mention utility companies. Actually, it's not clear that the duck island claim was paid - it had 'not allowable' written next to it - not that he didn't claim (and get paid) for other inexcusable expenses.. I think you've missed the point. I'm not saying Sweden has a worse healthcare system to us. Far from it. I'm saying that Anna wouldn't want our NHS to be run like the Swedish healthcare system due to the role of private healthcare, which is much more significant than in the UK.
