The Government and Sheffield council advised people to buy diesel back in the eighties , I did ,still got it its done 220 ,000 miles if thats not saving the environment then I don't know what is.

Well, I'm not entirely sure about that, certainly given the thwacking great carbon footprint a new car makes. If you don't do high miles, I'm not sure which harms the environment over all the least.

Is this supposed to be some kind of defence for polluting the lake with bread and harming the wild life by feeding it inappropriately?

Let me paraphrase "other people harm wildlife more, so it's okay if I give it malnutrition"... Is that your argument?
