Views on the budget.

When of the "headline" items is a pocket change allocation of fund for "potholes" you know that they're scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Moderate increase in the personal allowance is good for those in work, but best for those who earn the most.

IR35 proposals is an attack on the self-employed contractor industry, hopefully they'll be out of power before the proposed implementation date.

every year, the budget is an opportunity to announce something big, difficult, brave.

like HS3, or a tidal lagoon power station, or a much needed kick up the backside for the housing market. or etc. so much needs dealing with.

every year, the cans get kicked further down the road by a smiling chancellor announcing yet another tiny tax adjustment, and another year subsidising car use.

it's depressingly predictable.

No mention of the budget on the forum

is that what you had in mind?

Not really the time for a big brave budget though, the country has bigger problems on the horizon.

The digital service tax is quite interesting though, it's good to see something is finally being done and that we're taking the lead.

It's a nice idea but completely unworkable without global cooperation.

Spreadsheet Phil is not known for his flamboyance, so this giveaway budget was quite a surprise, an election in early 2019 could be the reason.

What exactly is given away? I don't even know why it's being called that.

A small increase in tax allowances, as has happened every year for quite some time, in a way that mostly benefits the well off... And no increase in tax on petrol, as has been the case for about a decade.

Hardly being generous.
