despritdan
There's been a lot of debate about this on Radio 5 and it seems the biggest driver of climate change is the amount of land used for feeding cattle because of the ever increasing demand for beef from an ever increasing human population. This means rainforests which are the lungs of the planet are being destroyed because of human consumption. The population of Africa is projected to double in 25 years with Africa becoming one huge farm to feed their ever spiralling population. No more rainforests, no more wildlife. People in 3rd World countries consume less than people in developed countries but have large families. People in developed countries have smaller families but consume more than people in 3rd World countries. What is accelerating climate change is the influx of people from 3rd World countries into developed countries because they bring their culture of large families with them so you end up with large populations who all consume a lot. I’m not sure what you are saying. Do you think we should be vegans, or cannibals?
tinfoilhat
We could all be vegans in this country but unless it's a global thing it's largly pointless. Besides, this country I'd suggest the amount of pesticides we use on cereal crops does the most damage to the environment.
melthebell
I’m not sure what you are saying. Do you think we should be vegans, or cannibals? as i said, you can feed the world on far less grain, using far less of the land than you can feeding grain to animals for meat

He’s allowed to eat what he wants, isn’t he? He also has the right to free speech, doesn’t he? I can’t see what your problem is.

apelike
If we all became Vegans/vegetarians would it help save the planet? No is the simple answer but it may if it helps kills off some because of vitamin deficiencies. ---------- Post added 01-11-2018 at 22:47 ---------- if i remember right, it takes far more grain to feed the cattle for meat than it would to feed the people with the grain, aswell as the deforesation etc for the cattle ranches But as the grain is plentiful and cheap it gets fed to cattle although cattle normally dont eat it as their normal diet would be grass. As said there is no simple answer. If people want to be vegetarian for instance then a lot of forest is being destroyed for palm oil and to grow soya beans. A lot of Asian countries rely primarily on rice as their staple diet and yet growing rice in paddy fields accounts for around 40% IIRC of worldwide methane released into the atmosphere. A better way to help save the planed is to ditch global importation of food and have locally sourced food. I believe in a lot of what Schumacher proposed in his book "Small is Beautiful."
