Penistone 999 and albert are absolutely right about religion in general; it's always been a way of controlling people through fear and the brainwashing element of Islam makes it especially dangerous. I'm not sure how brainwashing people from birth makes them free to believe what they want; I would have thought it had the opposite effect.

The so-called 'brainwashing' element of Islam exists in all other faiths, in that believers subscribe to a particular set of beliefs. On what grounds do you claim it's 'especially dangerous' in Islam?

How does going to a religious school equate to being able to be free to believe what you want? Isn’t that the opposite?

In Albert's case he proposes banning religious schools and has previously spoken about banning religion altogether - in the case of banning religion altogether he's talking about about removing people's freedom to express their beliefs, something that IS  subscribe to and various totalitarian states, dictators and fascist leaders down the ages also subscribe to.

I don’t have a problem with banning religious schools. 

 

There is an obvious problem in banning religion for the reasons you’ve outlined, it’s not possible to ban thought anyway. There is a difference between wanting something banned and wanting something to no longer exist though.

 

If Albert has advocated banning religion, then I would disagree with them.

You can't ban religion but what you can do is remove legal protections like the ridiculous blasphemy laws, tax relief given by the use of charitable status and the use of religious belief as a defence against prosecution or failure to comply with equality legislation.

 

That would be a start.

The Radio 4 programme The Moral Maze this week featured the subject of returning ISIS members, in particular Ms Begum. The last speaker was particularly interesting because he said there is intelligence which throws some doubt on her statement that she was ‘just a housewife’. His description of her activities seems to fit this. If true, it is perhaps a contributory factor to her citizenship being revoked.
