16 MPs claiming cash to rent London homes - while letting out their own

I'm not sure what you are proposing is done about it. All MPs from outside London need a home in London and one in their constituency to do their job properly. If they choose to rent their own private home out for some of the time that it is not being used I can't see how you can stop them.

The easy way to solve this is to create a halls of residence for MP`s while they are in London.

That is just about the only sensible thing I have ever seen you post on here. 😱

There is still a fair amount of undeveloped land in Vauxhall south of the river where the government could build two or three large hotels where MPs could stay while in London. A 10 minute walk from the House of Commons and if anyone wanted to live somewhere more salubrious they could pay for it out of their own pockets.

I wonder how much that would cost to buy the land and build?

Millions but the government would have a multimillion pound asset to add to their books so it would be cost neutral.

If they wanted to do it on the cheap they could change the law and build in Hyde Park, Green Park or Battersea Park. Even three well appointed hotels would not use much more than three or four acres out of over 600 acres.

Quite easily - their recoverable expenses on the home they rent in London is reduced by the rent recovery they  achieve / could expect to achieve on their own home.

Legitmate London Rent is say £750/week, recovery on home rental (whether they rent it out or not) would be £300/week. Expense paid is £450/week. I would also means test the need to rent a house out and not just use hotel accomodation before agreeing to recompense the MP's in the first place.

I can't see any justification for an MP living rent free in London whilst their mortgage is paid for them by tenants.

Hahaha, £750 a rent for a room yes, not for a house.

It wouldn't be cost neutral, it would have an opportunity cost associated, basically the amount those rooms could be rented out for if they weren't being allocated to MPs.

There is no reason why this cannot be done.

There’s plenty decent properties available in London at £3k a month.
