Wheatley and Bates

Recommended Posts

I am researching both my Granddad, John Thomas Denham, and The Sheffield Company, Wheatley and Bates.

John was born in the Isle of Wight in 1876, but shown as living in Dublin, Ireland on the 1901 census.  I have been able to establish that he worked for Wheatley and Bates of Sheffield from when it started up in 1893 and I have several newspaper articles from Dublin which mention him:

1905    ‘Mr J Hewitt and staff  of Wheatley and Bates were presenting J.T Denham with a present and wished him well for his new role in the wine trade after being with them for 12 years.’

1912    J.T Denham is shown again as being with Wheatley and Bates, Dublin and Sheffield’ as their Irish representative at new extensive premises in 110 Middle Abbey Street.  It was stated, ‘these offices are much more accessible and commodious than the older ones in Fleet Street.’  In the same article it is stated, ‘Mr Denham crosses to Sheffield this week to arrange the season’s programme.  Further extensions of the firms business are also in contemplation, particulars of which will shortly be announced.’

1919    J.T Denham is still recorded in 1919 as working with Wheatley and Bates as their Irish Agent.

I would be very grateful if anyone could help me with any information.

Thanks

Yvonne Allen

Hi Yvonne - welcome to the Forum! Here is a link to a thread about Wheatley & Bates that I started a few years ago. You may find some useful information about the firm. https://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/topic/417721-wheatley-amp-bates-mineral-water-manufacturers-etc/?tab=comments#comment-7606898

Some of the links in the thread no longer work, but here are links to an article about Wheatley & Bates that I wrote for a postcard collectors' magazine.  https://i.postimg.cc/vBwxDn3X/Have-a-Glass-of-Stym-1.jpg
