Consequences Of Brexit [Part 8] Read First Post Before Posting

Message added by Vaati

Mod Note: As we are getting rather tired of seeing reports about this. The use of the word Remoaners  is to cease. Either posts like adults, or don't post at all. The mod warnings have been clear.

In addition to remoaner we are also not going to allow the use of libdums or liebore - if you cannot behave like adults and post without recourse to these childish insults then please refrain from posting. If you have a problem with this then you all know where the helpdesk is.

As I understand it one of the main concerns is in the rearing and processing of meat products.

Steroid injected beef cattle is accepted in the US,and whilst chlorine washed chicken is not considered harmful by many experts,it is only necessary because of the low standards in rearing poultry which increases the risk of harmful bugs reaching the consumer.

I do believe that there is constant pressure to improve standards of food production in Europe and the UK and we do not need a backward step.

But we will get a backward step. One of the papers today were proudly proclaiming how we were going to get rid of EU standards. This is what we’ll get instead.

That's especially ironic given how much of a driving force we've been behind the creation of so many EU standards.

Even with EU standards we have had; tainted olive oil, benzene in perrier water, dioxins in poultry feed, E.coli scare from contaminated imported beans, the horsemeat scandal, contaminated chicken eggs, salmonella in baby milk, unsafe Polish exported meat.

Finally the realisation has started to kick in.  Pity it's taken over 3. 5 years.

I'd make Bercow stand in the clock tower to get a front row view.

But they were scandals because they shouldn't have happened, none of them. The defects book is what the americans are ALLOWED to get away with.

But presumably, just like we've had for the past 40 odd years under the EU, as a consumer I can exercise my right & either except & buy an imported food product or seek out & buy the locally sourced alternative?

I don't know about you but the chicken / turkey we always purchase comes from butchers who source meat as local as possible.  As far as I know, we've never eaten an EU chicken so I'm not about to start getting worked up regarding any US poultry that I'm never going to eat.

Here's something to cheer everyone up.

You've got to admire his futile optimism.

well, yes you have, obviously.

For one thing : we're in the EU.

and another the 'local' produce you buy still has to comply with the regulations.

(thankfully)

if we're going to accept lower standards on imported food, uk producers will be allowed to adopt the lower standards. (higher standards mean higher costs)
