Time To Stop The Obsession With Space Travel?

We are going to run out of helium at some point. If memory serves, we can’t get hold of any more in the planet, it’s finite. Nearest source? The moon.

It's not high on the priorities list, and there is plenty left in the ground. Until now, it's never been profitable enough to survey and drill for it explicitly, as plenty bubbles up as a by-product of the petrochemical industry. USA deflated the price for a long time (see what I did there) by selling off its reserves, so price adjustment is in the offing.

Well put. Which is why I think wasting time and effort and resources on space travel/tourism benefits nobody but those employed by it or making money from it.

So if you ever need a CAT scan, you'll refuse on principle because it came from the space programme?

They don't do CAT scans any longer. It is CT scans now, which are slightly more advanced.

This is a brilliant topic for a light hearted thread:

The great and the good need somewhere to escape to if a meteor is on a collision course with earth.

Finished  watching 'The Planets' with Prof. Brian Cox the other day.

He reckons we need to move at least to the Jupiter moon of Titan before the Sun expands & engulfs the inner planets.   No worries though, we've got about 5 billion years.

Do you think Brexit will be done by then.

You may want to do some research about what it has given us before making such bold, ill-informed statements.

Living on a planet with finite resources and an ever-expanding population, sure let's not try and explore other planets with those resources, let's follow your views and instead allow the human race to die out due to over-population, starvation and exhaustion of the planet's resources.

You're living in cloud cuckoo land if you think we will ever be making meaningful use of the resources of other planets! All the progress to date and we can just about manage a bit of moon dust or a vial of gas if we get lucky and don't crash.

At some point people will realise that time, brains and earth's resources are better utilised seeking solutions to over-population, starvation and exhaustion of the planet's resources. This is the planet that the human race evolved on and will eventually become extinct on- in the blink of an eye in the history of time.

And why is extinction such a bad thing?

You are of course free (within reason) to control your own extinction but not that of others.

One of the brilliant bits of Evolution theory is that the genes of the individuals who think extinction is a good thing only very rarely manage to pass on their genes.

The problem with that isn't about space travel and distances.  It's about how long a 'Civilisation' will last.

As things are...Best guess...??...Humans won't last another 500 years on Planet Earth before we wipe each other out.

The exact same goes for 'Any' of the Civilisations out there.!

This is why we will Never find life elsewhere...We wipe ourselves out before we are technically capable of finding it.

And Visa Versa.
