If I remember correctly in the 1960s Southern Irish building workers could work tax free in England for 6 months.

The EU requirement was that any citizen of any member country could move to any other EU country and work there.

The regulation also stated that that right was only for 90 days. After which time if the person couldn't prove that they could support themselves without state aid they had to leave.

A number of EU member states including Denmark and The Netherlands enforced that requirement. Obviously in order to do so a certain amount of efficiency and competence is required. Our government did not enforce the requirement 🙄 instead they did what they always did back then, blame the EU.

No I was not but it did not work , many still here who have never worked a day .

They were around 200 years earlier helping to build the canals.

It didn't work because it wasn't implemented.

The ability was provided by the EU directive to enable the authorities to control citizens from other EU countries by ensuring that they needed to provide proof of where they were staying and report in when required and then after three months provide proof that they were able to support themselves or they had to leave.

Other EU countries applied those restrictions, we didn't. We can hardly blame the EU for that but that is exactly what our politicians did.

This should be required reading for our contributors who insist that Brexit has been a success and that it has not caused costs to rise and that we are now trading normally again.

I suppose they will find a way to skirt around the facts rather than be honest and accept that it has been a disaster for the UK.
