Visas differ in what they cover. In the 12 months to February this year 49% were visitor visas which allow someone to stay for 6 months. https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/immigration-system-statistics-year-ending-december-2022/summary-of-latest-statistics There were 2.8 million visas issued in 2022 so 3 million is in line, although the 2022 number was down by 11% from 2019. The Conservative Party are backed by big business and they need workers, so the chances of the Tories taking any drastic action to stem immigration is unlikely. They all bring money into the country, but they need somewhere to live, we are full.

That is one of the main problems. Ireland have the same situation, they have a housing problem in regard to their own population and have taken in over 80,000 Ukrainian refugees in addition. What needs to be borne in mind is that we have a first world problem, and through no fault of their own others have a disaster to deal with. Don't forget tho, you need to accept the vote.

Correct. It was democracy in action. And as everyone knows once a democratic vote has been cast - even when non binding - it cannot be altered. Magilla
The bad news continues apace... Kemi Badenoch’s booster strategy fails to cover the cost of Brexit on UK trade: https://www.ft.com/content/4ca9ae65-d596-4049-b776-db50e69e27ce UK goods exports to the EU falling over the period by 7.2 per cent and non-EU exports by 9.8 per cent... ...the result of the UK being slowly cut out of EU value-chains. Could we actually have a Brexit that starts working please, and pretty damned soon ?

You said that he lived in the wealthiest country in the world in response to my post # 7078, where I pointed out that the wealthiest country in the world has an immigrant population of 97.1% . I was referring somewhat tongue in cheek to America. Luxemburg has an immigrant population of 43.5% Using the GNP per capita method which is the method which places Luxemburg above most countries including the USA I simply pointed out that in fact Ireland is currently number one by that method and he doesn't live there. Understand? Closer to 48% (LUSTAT Data Explorer • Total population, Luxembourgers and foreigners, of usual residence in Luxembourg by sex (statec.lu)) AFAIK Lewis Hamilton still lives in Monaco, much much tax-friendlier to the wealthy, than Luxembourg which is not that much friendlier than others (Luxembourg Tax Rates & Rankings | Luxembourg Taxes (taxfoundation.org)) Spent some time in the UK a couple weeks ago, visiting my offices in Surrey and Greater Manchester, then friends and family in South Yorks. So one of those visitor/business visas could have been mine, though it certainly wasn't printed (or, if it was, then I never received any copy). Not the best time of year for that trip, unfortunately. Hugs and Kisses to all 😉
Magilla
A new report reveals the huge and lasting economic costs of Brexit: https://www.theneweuropean.co.uk/a-new-report-reveals-the-huge-and-lasting-economic-costs-of-brexit/ Ever wondered why your taxes are so high and public services are in such a poor state? Now you know Brexit had already cost the UK 1% of GDP before it even left the EU. In the three years after the transition period, the cost has increased to 2-3%. That is only the beginning. These costs and problems do not go away, they are not one offs. NIESR calculates that by 2035 the cost will rise to 5-6% of GDP. For comparison: That's three times the entire UK defence budget!
