And what is your comment about these statistics? What's do you say they illustrate?

Numbers are very clear - black or african-americans are over-represented in the relative numbers of killed by police and also are (largely) over-represented in relative numbers of committed violent crimes. It is expected that probability of being killed by police increases with probability of committing violent crimes. These numbers also don't conclude any racial targeting of victims of police killings.

That’s your misunderstanding of those statistics.

If it is exclusively the case that black people are more likely to die whilst being arrested for violent crime you might have a point.

Not sure Sheff Forum is widely read in Mexico.

The police unions in US are way too powerfull see what's just happened in Buffalo after the two who decked that 75 year old and more or less strode over his body,as he was lying there with his head split open.

Unbelievably the NY police force has a $6 billion budget per year, while other services are getting pared down to nothing .

Thankfully the violence on the rioters side seems to be ending ,they should get the justice they deserve.

I'll expand on my own point for the benefit of Branny as it wasn't clear enough for my liking.

A common claim is, broadly, that black people are more likely to commit (some) crime and will therefore be more likely to die at the hands of police when taken into custody.  Simple enough.  But wrong.

A) If you hypothesize that blacks commit 50% of all crime in the US, for every 1000 crimes, 500 will be committed by black people. It follows, for every arrest you'd expect half to be of blacks.

B) Then hypothesize 1 in 1000 people die in police custody.  In 10,000 arrests you'd expect 10 deaths and 5 of them to be of blacks.  If it's more than 5 they are over-represented.

Saying blacks commit more crime so it's not surprising more die in custody conflates the two things and completely misses the point.

I would imagine so. It’s a show of support and solidarity for the protesters in the US, and the more people objecting to this disgusting police brutality we see time and again, the better.

In that case, I would like there to be world wide protests for this cause.

There are protests in France, Australia that I know of for sure. Like the UK, you wouldn't have to dig down very far to find institutionalised racism.
