I think sending via UPS is around £50 (so, £20 more), how do they compare to DHL?

I think DHL are German based so they maybe a bit better for German deliveries. I don’t use DHL so cant comment but for stuff coming in from the eu and far beyond my suppliers use FedEx or ups. Neither are massively cheap as you point out. Depends on the value of what you are sending.

 

Key thing for any courier, package it properly.

I've used them a few times sending stuff to Europe. I was anticipating similar for sending to Canada, nope, was around 3.5x more expensive. Went with DHL in the end. *fingers_crossed*

90 odd percent (and much more than that) that are packaged and labelled properly get through absolutely fine.
