Will the vaccine be any use,

UK hospitals told to take 'immediate action' as coronavirus mutation spreads to humans

UK HOSPITALS have been put on alert for patients with a new coronavirus mutation that is spreading from minks to humans.

Experts fear the new strain of the deadly virus is resistant to a vaccine. Jonathan Van Tam, the deputy chief medical officer, has told doctors, nurses and GPs across the UK to take “immediate action”.

We've introduced a travel ban from Denmark, so you would think that the England v Iceland match on Sunday at Wembley would be postponed, as Iceland are playing away at Denmark tonight.  Not the case.  Apparently we are trying to find another venue, so the players can say they are not travelling (directly) from Denmark.

I guess the England players (in close contact with the Iceland players who played Denmark a few days earlier) will not face any isolation on their return to the UK , and will be free to play for their Premier League teams in their next matches.  After all, we can't allow Covid to stop Premier League football, can we?

Of course, if any of the players test positive for the new Covid a few days later, it will be too late to do anything....

Another question that the experts will think is stupid i imagine, but if you don't ask, how will one learn.

If we have had cancer around for much longer and spent billions apparently to find a cure how come re can't cure it ? is this because covid is similar to the flu so the flu vaccination was near enough to a covid one ?

thanks

So, the Government pre-ordered millions of doses of this before it was tested, then got it tested and "hey preso!" it passed the government's tests.  What a surprise, and what great foresight by HMG.  PR success before its even gone live!

Let's hope it does work - and that those in greatest need got it first - those NHS workers working closely with Covid, then Covid patients and the elderly who want it.

It sounds as if we're facing a bigger problem with this Mink variation - close the borders immediately and ban travel to and from Denmark as a matter of urgency.

To be fair to the Government (and I am usually a big critic), they've pre-ordered millions of different versions of the vaccine, just covering their bets on which one works first.

*edit*

Just noticed West77 has already pointed this out - move along, nothing to see here :)

The government hasn't had anything tested. The makers submit data from clinical trials to the regulatory authorities in each country they want to have the product licenced for use. The UK's regulatory agency (MHRA) will be the ones responsible for market authorisation here, and they haven't yet approved the Pfizer vaccine. Not all the required data is available yet, in any case.

The Government may not do testing themselves, but hand out licences to do the testing and can put pressure on organisations when they want to.  It's in their interests to get a vaccine out asap.  Russia said it had a vaccine months ago, and everybody said "Rubbish" and that they take years to develop.  Now we are holding out hope for one developed in months.  We all hope it does the job, but let's wait and see what the scientific community say first.

Can you imagine being tested by Johnson, Raab, Patel, Grayling, Redwood, Rees-Mogg etc

One of the things that the scientific community will tell you is that this one hasn’t been developed in months. There are years of research in this vaccine.

Oh, by the way, if Putin and Johnson were to hold an honesty contest, both would lose.

Just as the good news come through this comes along. It feels like the Gods are against us.

I will hold on strongly to what I've put in bold. What I know about mutation in viruses is that the mutation is not always fit for purpose.

It is sad ,but this mutation may be carried by other little furry creatures.

Quote

“The danger is that the mutated virus could then spread back into man and evade any vaccine response which would have been designed to the original, non-mutated version of the spike protein, and not the mink-adapted version. Of course, the mink version may not transmit well to man, so it’s a theoretical risk but Denmark is clearly taking a precautionary stance in aiming to eradicate the mink version so that this possibility is avoided or made much less likely.”

Jussi Peura, research director of the Finnish Fur Breeders’ Association and animal geneticist, was more sanguine. He said he understood the worry in Denmark, but felt the decision to carry out a cull might have been too extreme.

The link below is the full article from which the quote has been taken.
