I have been in charge of said trolley through the Hope Valley and we used to always struggle with taking card payments. Never any problems with cash.

They now have much  improved card machines which do not appear to have such problems.

From what I understand about those devices, payment isn't actually taken there and then. The card details are logged on to the device and payment is taken once the plane has landed.

Silly "HHR".

So you don't think a similar arrangement exists for when buses and trains are in a network blackspot?

Silly LovePotion.

Silly

I have operated the devices for catering purchases on trains and there were no such arrangements, Guards and TMs use different equipment, called an ENVO machine, we used an ECR EPOS, so their methods may be different. Certainly on buses, there are a hell of a lot of failed payments with cards.

Bus ticket machines are ITSO compatible, meet national standards and work in all environments and work with prepaid, credit, debit cards and smartphones.
