I have operated the devices for catering purchases on trains and there were no such arrangements, Guards and TMs use different equipment, called an ENVO machine, we used an ECR EPOS, so their methods may be different. Certainly on buses, there are a hell of a lot of failed payments with cards.

I asked a friend who works for one of the bus companies.

He was able to get be a stat.

Over the course of 7 days, less than 1% of debit/credit transactions fail. 99% of those failures are Bank declined.

There are thousands of card transactions over 7 days so no there aren't "hell of a lot of failed payments" Less than 10 per 1000 transactions. I

The buses hunt in packs, of generally 3 waiting for unsuspecting victims  to cause maximum frustration to, I recon the buses hide behind bushes wait for the other to catch up, and then hunt passengers and when they snare there victims make them late for work often waiting for no reason randomly at bus stops when no passengers are getting on or off

And then the 2nd bus which set off 15 minutes later. overtakes the bus you are on.
