Sorry, yeah, I meant vinyl flooring, I've seen the price of Lino in Cole Brothers, and it's not cheap.

Afterall, chav's have houses, does that make a house a chav phenomenon? I don't think so.

Laminate flooring is a lot nicer than lino. It might not last longer than 5 or 10 years, but then neither does a carpet, and it doesn't cost any more than a carpet so why should that be a problem?

Obviously I have some laminate, since i'm defending it. The study is laminate as it seemed to make more sense in a room that is office like, and it makes it easy to clean.

I'd have preferred real wood, but it does cost a lot more. Might still have real wood in the dining room, not entirely happy with the tiles.

I endorse everything you say Cyclone.

It's easy to clean which for me is the main point in it's favour.

Who wouldn't prefer real wooden flooring, but who can afford that? Not me.

Is it a Chav thing?

Only if you laminate your entire house.. And obviously you have to get good quality stuff to avoid a chav look. Fantastic in bathrooms to keep clean. Much nicer than lino especially lino that pretends to look like laminate flooring.

Though apparently carpet is back in fashion according to knitted Kirstie of Location Location fame and I have to say I love my deep thick carpet in the lounge...

Quality lino such as Marmoleum is absolutely beautiful. But yes, it does cost a fair bit and requires specialist fitting.

Laminate flooring is OK for something like a kids' playroom I reckon. Otherwise it's pretty bad, though I think this is often because it's sold as something you can lay yourself, and hence just ends up being very badly installed.

When I was looking at houses a few years ago my heart used to sink when I saw it laid over every possible surface. I swear, they'd have stuck it on the walls if they could.

I think it looks quite nice - clean etc - but it's freezing to live with.

I wouldn't have it 'cos it's just too cold. Nothing to do with chav-ness.

And isn't all this talk of chav's just another way of looking down your nose on people?

Worse than that, I went to look at a house a few years ago where they wanted laminate flooring, but didn't want the expense. Instead, they up ALL the floorboards downstairs in a rough line about 1" away from the skirting board, then nailed... wait for it... large pieces of MDF! I kid ye not...

Mind you, in the bathroom they'd replaced the bath/shower cubicle with tiled floor so the entire room was the shower floor, kind of like at the swimming baths. A very odd set of DIY indeed.
