next steps of reopening

provisionally from Monday 17th May

- pubs can open for indoor service

- rule of 6 continues indoors whilst larger groups will be permitted outdoors

- table service only

- masks must be worn when not seated

- all must sign in with NHS Test & Trace

- Social distancing measures in place

- various other safety guidelines such as low volume of TV/music, enhanced cleaning regimes etc remain in place

provisionally from Monday 21st June

- social distancing requirements lifted and pubs can operate as normal

- conditions may still apply to large events, nightclubs, festivals etc such as admission being on the condition of a negative Covid test. The government is still researching this.

Not really.

But people are so desperate for a Pint they'll brave the cold for it! :loopy:

Not so much desperate for a pint - you can drink beer at home (although there are some traditional beers you can only have properly in a pub), more the ability to see friends and family to socialise, pubs really are all about providing a place to do that. Remember we still aren't allowed to mix with anyone we don't live with indoors.

Well seeing as I refuse on principle to pay more than £12 for a round (of about 4 to 5 people) I'd definitely be avoiding the Abbey :D

Seriously - you are expecting to pay less than £3 per drink? Only place that cheap is Wetherspoons and they can't afford to pay for enough staff to deliver the table service adequately.

Paid nearly £3  for a very small coke in their about 3 years ago.Don’t mind paying a bit extra for somewhere nice but it’s nothing special imo

Ah, we're talking soft drinks and pre-covid.... and specifically the Abbey! It does seem to be somewhere that had regular changes of management over the last few years too.

In more general terms, pre-covid (which is now over a year ago) the normal price for a pint of session ale was around £3 in a free house.

At the moment venues have higher costs of operation with having to provide table service and everything else but much lower capacity with social distancing and currently outdoor only - therefore the costs per customer are much higher, so it is no surprise prices may be a bit higher in some pubs to compensate. This is also after a year of losing a lot of money - the cost of keeping the business/staff/premises whilst closed and not getting adequate government support.

Then there is the whole side issue of pub company leases where independent local operators rent the pub from the likes of Heineken's Star/Punch Pub Company or Stonegate's Enterprise Inns and are often contractually tied to buy their wet stock from the pub company at inflated prices. Further to this there are the stories of Heineken charging full rent through lockdown to all tenants that aren't tied to buy Heineken brands pretty much forcing them out of business.

Pubs need our support to survive until normality resumes, although I would obviously still favour the better ones with my custom!

Pre-lockdown I ocassionally drank in the Rawson Spring in Hillsborough and attended the quiz in the Crown and Glove most Wednesday nights, both pubs offer cheap Pints :D

Stag's Head on Psalter Lane has lots of covered areas, no heaters though. You can't book, its first come first served.

The Broadfield has a covered area with heaters. I think they take bookings, but most of the tables are walk in.
